How It Works

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method to estimate body fat percentage.

For men: %BF = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 × log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) - 450

For women: %BF = 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) - 450

All measurements are converted to centimeters for calculation. Results are categorized into essential fat, athletes, fitness, average, and obese ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Navy method for body fat?

The U.S. Navy method estimates body fat percentage using circumference measurements of the neck, waist, and hips (for women), along with height. It's a widely used and reasonably accurate field method.

How accurate is the Navy body fat formula?

The Navy method is accurate to within about 3-4% of more advanced methods like DEXA scans. It's best used for tracking trends over time rather than as an absolute measurement.

Where should I measure my waist?

Measure your waist at the navel (belly button) level. For the neck, measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple). For hips, measure at the widest point of the buttocks.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 14-17% is considered the fitness range and 18-24% is average. For women, 21-24% is fitness and 25-31% is average. Essential fat minimums are about 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women.
