Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and estimate reading time instantly as you type or paste text.
How It Works
Paste or type your text into the input area and the tool instantly calculates:
- Words — Counts groups of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks.
- Characters — Total characters including spaces, and a separate count excluding spaces.
- Sentences — Detected by sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?).
- Paragraphs — Blocks of text separated by blank lines.
- Reading time — Estimated at 200 words per minute.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is estimated at an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, which is a commonly accepted rate for adult readers.
How are sentences counted?
Sentences are counted by detecting ending punctuation marks (periods, exclamation marks, and question marks). Text without ending punctuation is counted as one sentence if it contains any content.
How are paragraphs counted?
Paragraphs are separated by one or more blank lines. Each block of text between blank lines counts as one paragraph.
Does the character count include spaces?
Both counts are shown: characters with spaces and characters without spaces, so you can use whichever is relevant for your needs.
